The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a significant awards ceremony nears, you'll find a clamor to include of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications actually cover many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
