Our Premier Album of the Year: Rosalía's Lux Claims the Number One Place.

On the surface, Lux might appear closer to a challenging academic examination than the latest popular music album from an artist whose last single featured a global K-pop icon. Broken across four different sections and performed in 13 tongues, we have a head-spinning symphonic opus exploring female mystery, spiritual transcendence, and corporal transformation, frequently by way of the perspective of various women saints. The end of a relationship—a topic treated with raw honesty elsewhere—is launched heavenward here, carried by the lush sound of a full symphony orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer within an extensive roll call of contributors. The pure daring by itself renders the work of contemporary artists look quite laughable.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

That this album manages to escape overly academic posturing feels nothing short of a miracle, with sole credit going to Rosalía. While this is not the first time project to fuse the past with modern styles, the ambitions are much higher on Lux, with the balancing act far more precarious. The element that truly elevates this fourth album, beyond its multilayered tunes, rich arrangements, and engrained theatricality, is an essential spirit of fun. Similar to the iconic artist during her peak, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's singing which sweeps the listener up in its tornado. Even when she is breaking hearts apart, you nevertheless desire to stay right there for the ride.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

That exuberant spirit comes forth brightly during the stirring piano-led ballad about Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool for more than four moments. Suddenly, everything falls silent, and there's a spontaneous giggle and a comment before a hilariously exaggerated string surge crashes down like comedic impact. The song then segues to the frenetic single driven by racing orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a cameo appearance from none other than herself.

"The charm of Lux lies in the listener rarely quite know—nor want to know—where it will go next."

Nearly each track concludes at a totally distinct place than how it began. A track examines the fleeting trappings of fame with a featherlight symphony before disintegrating in digital chaos. Another, a cut echoing the artist's earlier rhythmic work begins off dark and sinister, with menacing vocals, until sudden flamenco handclaps and a heavenly chorus enter to soften its jagged edges.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Pop

Another crucial achievement on the album involves navigating the gap between radical experimentation and broad appeal. This is little coincidence that it has achieved the artist's highest-charting release to crack the Top 5 of major charts: at its core a collection of utterly catchy hits. One track sung primarily in English swells on a chorus that feels to gather increasingly nagging hooks as it spirals skyward. That trick is repeated by another expansive ballad that grows and contracts, intertwining multiple tunes as an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused number charms via its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • In its words, it aligns with pop culture honesty of other breakup songs, lambasting an ex- partner labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the singing carry a painted-on smile, like a storybook character hiding a blade: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

This album represents pop on a grand scale, a hungry reach for high artistry amid of impending artificial sameness. It eschews solipsism for sublime transcendence, crafting a dramatic spectacle that skillfully controls its inherent ridiculousness. It is a deep well of buried treasure that takes time to fully mine but never seem like a chore. While other major releases of 2025 felt like feasting on meal, Lux offers a lavish feast at which the guests at the table, perhaps intoxicated on holy wine, flutter between discussions about historical figures, the profound feeling of soul-shattering grief, and common gossip about useless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from music's most endlessly inventive practitioner.
