Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
