British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.
The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.
RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey commented. "Including them were numerous UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."
Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN says Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
