Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
